人年少时不知道忧愁的滋味,喜欢登高远望。喜欢登高远望,为写一首新词无愁而勉强说愁。

Translation (English):

“A Slave Girl’s Song -Written on the Wall of a Road in the Boshan Mountain”

Xin Qiji

When I was young, I did not know the taste of sorrow, but I loved to climb the tower. I loved to climb the tower, forcing myself to talk about sorrow in order to write new poems.

Now I have tasted the taste of sorrow, yet I want to talk but cannot. I want to talk but cannot, and I can only say, “It’s a good autumn, so cool.”

Explanation:

This poem by Xin Qiji, a famous poet of the Song Dynasty, depicts the transition from a carefree youth to a more mature age. The young man, in his naivety, does not understand the weight of sorrow and therefore enjoys climbing high places and talking about it in his poems. However, as he grows older and experiences more, he comes to understand the true meaning of sorrow and finds it difficult to express. He can only describe the autumn weather as being cool, a season often associated with reflection and a sense of loss. This poem captures the essence of human experience, the transition from innocence to wisdom, and the inability to fully express one’s feelings, even in the most beautiful language.
