Once, the King of a certain country received an elephant as a gift from his neighbor’s king. The people of the land had never seen an elephant before and were very curious about it. The king, in order to show his subjects how great he was, issued a command to have the elephant weighed. But the elephant was so large and heavy that no one could find a way to weigh it.
At this point, the young曹冲, the king’s son, came forward with a plan. He said that they should cut the elephant into pieces and then weigh each piece individually. The king was shocked and angry, thinking that 曹冲 was suggesting they kill the elephant. However, 曹冲 explained that he only wanted to use the boats.
曹冲 said, “Please place the elephant on a large boat and mark the water level when it is fully immersed. Then, we can take the elephant off the boat and place other objects, one by one, on the boat until the water level reaches the same height as when the elephant was on it. By weighing each of these objects, we can get the total weight of the elephant.”
